Miami is definitely the most culturally diverse city I have ever lived in, but somehow, people still manage to judge. During my first year here, the kids used to make fun of me for having a British accent because of my studies in a British school in Madrid. I even got made fun of for my Spanish accent when I spoke Spanish because of the lisp the Spanish have when they speak (compared to many of the local Cubans). In the other countries, I was judged for the people I spent my time with. But in the United States, I was the source, and it felt different.

Longer essays may also contain an introductory page that defines words and phrases of the essay's topic. Most academic institutions require that all substantial facts, quotations, and other porting material in an essay be referenced in a bibliography or works cited page at the end of the text. This scholarly convention helps others (whether teachers or fellow scholars) to understand the basis of facts and quotations the author uses to support the essay's argument and helps readers evaluate to what extent the argument is supported by evidence, and to evaluate the quality of that evidence. The academic essay tests the student's ability to present their thoughts in an organized way and is designed to test their intellectual capabilities.

Remember that there are different types of personal essays, and when writing one, your purpose might be to entertain, to inform, or to support or oppose a specific position. No matter which type of personal essay you're writing, you want to present your personal experiences, observations, and views with your particular purpose in mind. Remember to stay focused with a narrow scope, to edit your ideas so that you're presenting only relevant points, and be sure that you don't meander. Rein in your points and examples so that you don't ramble in your paper.

Write at least three drafts of your essay. Think of your first draft as your rough draft. After you're done writing it, wait a day or two, then take a look at it with fresh eyes. Does your essay say everything you want it to? Try reading it from the perspective of an admissions officer or employer. Do you stand out? How can you rewrite your essay to make it better? After you're done writing a second draft, take another day or two, then look at it again. Are there any other improvements that you can make? Is this the absolute best essay that you can write?
